The Challenge of Aging

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. (Douglas MacArthur, noted World War II army general)

According to MacArthur, characteristics of youth include faith and hope, while older people generally replace those things with doubt and despair. Perhaps he’s challenging the older generation to remember the more positive attitudes of their younger days. Certainly, life would be much better for everyone – no matter their age – if lived with faith and hope.

The three most important things to have are faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of them is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
